Corfu, Ionian Islands
The Ionian Islands is the collective name for seven islands located off the western coast of Greece. In English they are known as Corfu, Paxo, SantaMaura, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zante and Cerigo and in Greek Kerkyra, Paxi, Lefkadha, Ithaki, Kefallonia, Zakynthos, and Kythera.
By the Second Treaty of Paris in 1815 the islands became a British protectorate. In 1818 Sir Thomas Maitland, the Governor of Malta, was also givenresponsibility for the Ionian Islands, and appointed Lord High Commissioner. British regiments and detachments were stationed on the islands andmoved regularly to and from Malta. A number of civilians also spent time in both places.
Sir Frederick Ponsonby was serving as the Inspecting Field Officer on the Ionian Islands when he was appointed Governor of Malta in 1827 followingthe death of the Marquess of Hastings.
Britain handed the islands over to Greece in May 1864, and the last British Lord High Commissioner Sir Henry Storks, took up the post of Governor ofMalta in the November of that year.
