Initially lived in Gisborne (with the Wade family), where he cut scrub. He learnt beekeeping at Ruakura (Hawkes Bay) and went to Gallipoli with theWellington Rifles.
Repatriated (wounded) Dec 1915 on SS Rotorua out of Plymouth with Wellington Infantry Battalion
He later took up beekeeping, for a short period with Tom Winter in Little River before moving to the West Coast (Wainihinihini).
