Washington State Department of Natural Resources
Lead Economist
Bruce is presently Lead Economist for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
He provides consulting advice on DNR land management activities from an economic
perspective. BruceĆs principal responsibility is to make quarterly forecasts of revenues earned
from commercial activities carried out on trust lands managed by the department. At present,
about 80% of these revenues are sourced from timber production.
Originally from New Zealand, Bruce worked as a scientist with the Forest Research Institute
before joining DNR. His research in New Zealand spanned the value chain, from resource to end
product. Prior to leaving New Zealand, he worked on a major project focused on evaluating
market perceptions of radiata pine lumber, as part of an interdisciplinary project team relating
product attributes to resource characteristics.
Bruce has an honors undergraduate degree in forestry science from the University of Canterbury
in New Zealand, and a PhD in forest economics from Michigan State University.
